Pam Wedgwood treks The Great Wall of China

16.05.06

Pam Wedgwood, prolific composer, musician, teacher and writer of over 90 Faber Music books, has always been actively involved in sporting activities.  Whether it be sailing, running the London Marathon, cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats or parachute jumping, she’s tried it all! This month Pam embarks on one of her most gruelling trips to date – a fund-raising treck along the Great Wall of China, whilst back in the UK her new adult piano tutor It’s never too late to play piano is published – proving that it really is never too late to do something if you really want to! Here Pam talks about her trip.

Dear friends,

On May 20th 2006 I flew to Beijing to take part in a World Expedition trek to the Great Wall of China.

In order to take part in this challenge it was necessary to raise £3000 for the charity of my choice, which was The Fountain Centre. This centre is wonderful place where cancer sufferers can receive holistic treatments whilst they are in various stages of recovery.

It is part of St. Luke’s cancer Care at The Royal Free Hospital in Guildford Surrey. With the help of my 2 sons and many musician friends we managed to hold various concerts and raised a staggering £4500 .

The first concert held at Foxhills Country Club (A mini version of the X Factor!!) was a great success and tempted many would be acts to come out of the woodwork and perform to a more than enthusiastic audience.

Other events included a Jazz Boogie and Soul afternoon held at Sir William Perkins’ school in Chertsey, this also went down a storm even when the heating system broke down before the concert. To keep warm lots of dancing was a must!! Anyway my thanks to everyone who kindly donated and made this journey possible.

It is particularly relevant for me as I was diagnosed with cancer last June. The type of cancer I have is called Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and is a slow growing cancer, which affects the immune system.

At the moment I am fighting fit and am planning on doing all sorts of mad things in the future while I am able.

A little bit about the trip.

We will be covering many interesting stages of the wall including a long trek into Inner Mongolia. I have never taken part in an organized trek before although I have done a fair amount of cycling and running in the last few years. This one is going to be a real challenge as we are trekking on very rough ground. Rumour has it that it will be very up and downy! -oh joy my bunions will love it! We are traveling with mules and camping by the wall side as we go. No home comforts and certainly no glasses of wine with our food, which will be cooked by our guides! The only thing I am concerned about is my feet as over the years they have had quite a lot of wear and tear! I hope they will last out! I have been in training and have been doing lots of long walks with my dog Lottie. I think she will be pleased when this is over! Our longest day is from Bainiao to Hua Shi Fort 11 hours (can’t wait for this one!). We will be trekking for 12 days in all!

I will update you on my trip when I return and just to remind you all that “It’s Never Too Late” to do anything if you really want to!!!

Best wishes

Pam
